Ginetta Foreign Lands

Ginetta received some images of the first Ginetta G50 out in Spain today, 7th May\. In its debut Spanish GT race (Campeonato de España de GT), the Javier Morcillo team brought the car home 4th against two Ferrari 430 Challenges and a Ferrari 430 GTS car in the GTB class (below).

Kanaroglou Konstantinos clocked the car’s fastest time of 1:43.877, averaging 133.428 Km/h in race two where he, along with co-driver Oliver Campos reached the podium in 3rd.

The car currently runs to the English G50 Cup regulations, but the car will be upgraded with the Britcar package when it’s developed.

Jemco will also equip their Ginetta G50 with the update package for their Britcar outings. Their races as A1GP support at Brands Hatch at the weekend were blemished by a finish-line collision.

The race report on Britcar's website www.britcar24hr.co.uk descibes the bizarre event:

Race winner Ian Flux positively cruised across the line, hugging the pit wall, with Giles Groombridge’s Mazda RX7, five laps down, but neck-and-neck with the Mosler, at about the same speed, on the opposite side of the track. In the middle of the track, racing to the line to secure the Class 3 victory was Chris Wilson in the Duke Video BMW M3, who then slowed in the confusion of seeing two cars in front of him crawling past the chequered flag. Close behind – very close behind by this point, are Leigh Smart’s Ginetta G50, and Richard Gomes in the Topcats Marcos, disputing seventh –in-class to the end. This was a motorway shunt type of crash, the Marcos nudging the Ginetta, which then ploughed into the back of the Duke BMW, which in turn caught the rear of the Mazda. Joining in too was the Seven Energy Porsche, Scott Aitken picking up the residual debris and collecting the Ginetta, the pair of them ending up in the Armco by the pit exit, with by far the worst damage from the sorry incident.

Marnix Vandermaesen and Steve Vanbellingen also took podium honours in their Belgian GT Championship debut at Zolder recently finishing 2nd in both their races. Team-mates Bert Redant and Tom Cloet in their Ginetta G50 finished in a fourth and fifth place in their category.

This was after last-minute ‘Balance of Power’ penalties were applied to the cars in Belgium. An additional 60kg of weight and 10mm ride height was applied.

Sweden’s 2008 Ginetta G20 Championship opened at the weekend at Sturup Raceway, Sweden. Twenty-two out of the thirty cars that have been exported into Scandinavia participated as support to the Swedish Touring Cars Championship.

Hampus Rydman (right) – guest racer at the British equivalent Championship at Rockingham in 2007 – won both races. Full results here

But the Swedes didn’t miss out on G50 action either, as Ginetta’s Jamie Robinson gave a fifteen-minute on-track demonstration in the build up to the Touring Cars races as an extra treat for the crowds.

A second Ginetta G50 car will leave for Spain shortly with interest in all cars - including the Ginetta Juniors - daily!
