Ginetta G50 Victorious in Belgian GT Championship
During the second meeting of the Belgian GT Championship in Dijon last weekend (10th / 11th May) KS Motorsport brought a Ginetta G50 home in its maiden win on foreign soil in race one thanks to a safety car period falling in favour of the Team.
Running in third behind the Aston Martin Vantage, the Ginetta pitted when he saw the Aston go off the track and crash heavily – anticipating a safety car would be deployed, which it was. This gave the KS Motorsport Team the advantage over the Porsche 996 GT3 Cup and Lotus 2 Eleven.
Second place in race two – behind the Porsche– came when the Lotus ran wide and picked up a puncture. The Aston Martin didn’t make it out for race two because of the extensive damage from its race one accident.
Steve Vanbellingen and Marnix Vandermaesen’s Ginetta G50 car was the only one to make the journey to Dijon. The second stayed back at base in Beligium.
Unfortunately for the sport, the two Ginetta G50s will now withdraw from the Championship due to restrictions being applied to the car by organisers.
“With the arrival of the Porsche 996 GT3 in our class the GT4 cars have little hope of doing well and this is not the ideal promotion for our Ginetta G50, a car of the newest generation” team manager Koen Leyssens explains. “In contrast to the championship’s philosophy, no ‘Balance of Power’ is applied between these cars and our GT4s. This results in an enormous unbalance in the favour of .the older cars, which enjoy greater freedom.”
“GT4 is a new concept which needs to be promoted, but we’re being beaten by cars which are 4 or 5 years older” adds Vanbellingen. The technical regulations are such that we can hardly, or not at all, evolve and therefore can’t reduce the difference.
