Surtees continues winning form at Pembrey
After a wet qualifying session Henry Surtees left himself with plenty to do if he was going to back up his Snetterton win with another at Pembrey, lining up in 7th and 6th places for the Dunlop Motorsport Festival races. Robert Gaffney, who also took a win last time out, took pole by almost a second for both rounds ahead of Tom Sharp and Graham Carroll.
However the races were to be dry and Surtees made a fantastic start in race one powering his way to second by the end of lap, but not even this lightening start could eclipse the getaway demonstrated by James Harrison. Starting alongside Surtees in eighth, he drove around the outside of the hairpin and led the Junior field by the end of the first tour.
With the level of driving and racing on display it’s easy to forget that all of these drivers are only 14 to 16-years old, and Surtees showed that some of his father’s talent has definitely rubbed off on young Henry when he took the lead on lap two. Harrison hadn’t given up though and the pair of them battled nose-to-tail for the rest of the race. It was only in the last few laps, when there was traffic to deal with that Surtees was able to make a small break ensuring he took the spoils.
Jordan Williams and Graham Carroll had a terrific scrap behind them swapping places several times through the race, with it only settled on the final lap in favour of Williams. Dominic Lakeman-Pettit took fifth, which was an excellent result after starting ninth, while James Jefferson was sixth after starting eleventh.
Race two again saw Harrison lead them round at the end of lap one, despite starting from the fourth row. At this stage Surtees was still fifth but on a charge, taking both Carroll and Sharp on lap two and then polesitter Gaffney a lap later. Getting by Harrison would take longer however, with excellent lap times being recorded by both drivers. It was only on the eighth lap when Surtees managed to find a way by and once in prime position was able to gradually eek out a lead, crossing the finish line 3.5 seconds ahead of his rival. Jordan Williams took a fine third, while the top six were rounded off by Carroll, Sharp and Gaffney.
The next round for the Playstation 2 Ginetta Juniors will be held at Croix in France on 1st and 2nd July and it’s all set to be another cracking event.
