Ginettas Delight in Derbyshire

There’s a great Title battle brewing at the head of the Ginetta Junior Championship coming into this, the youngsters fourth double-header weekend of the season so far.

Dino Zamparelli and Tom Carnaby have both had weekend ‘clean sweeps’ to head the points table with just five points separating them. Neither had had a race win in Sportscars at the dawn of this 2008 season; both were Rookies last year – Zamparelli only joining the grid in the latter half.

Zamparelli’s first win at Brands Hatch was reinforced by two at Cadwell Park during Ginetta’s 50th Anniversary festival. Yet it was Carnaby who dominated the top step of the podium three weeks ago at Rockingham.

Carnaby raced here at Donington in a Ginetta Junior last year so may have the edge on Zamparelli this weekend, but the current Championship leader is not phased at the prospect.

“Neither of us had been to Cadwell Park before at all and I won both races, I’m a quick learner” said Zamparelli. “It’s going to be a close race. You can get right in the slipstream of the car in front along the back straight underthe Dunlop bridge so there will be lots of overtaking there.”

Dominic Pettit won Round 5 here during the 2007 Championship (below) when he raced with Carnaby and will no doubt be wishing to taste victory once again.

Pettit frequently threatens with pace but often fails to find the finishing line, however, a runner-up spot for the Cambridge racer at Brands Hatch has already proved he is capable of podium finishes.

Alice Powell too has threatened for a second podium position after her first in Round Two. Her qualifying position and race pace have also improved since joining last year, but has also spun down the order – and at Rockingham – span out of third place having started 5th.

One Junior racer who hasn’t put a foot wrong so far is 17-year old newcomer Josh Hill. His little amount of experience in racing at any level compared to some of his fellow racers has not been reflected in his results.

A podium at Cadwell Park and consistently taking the flag in all rounds has him up in fourth place in the Championship table. Knocking on the podium door once again at Rockingham, he only finished 0.3 seconds behind Jake Farndon who finished third.

Farndon is also the man heading Hill in the points stakes but only by four points. Three third places and no no-scores so far have undoubtedly helped his cause; consistently scoring good points being the key to a solid Championship finish in a closely-run one-make Championship such as this.

Round Two race winner George Richardson has struggled to return to form since then, leaving him down in 9th place sandwiched between Powell and Pettit. A rear-end slide into the concrete banking of Turn One at Rockingham in the first of two races there also eliminated him from race two because of chassis damage.

Expect to see good results from the speedy 16-year old on this more forgiving circuit if he can get to the front and his efforts at staying there pay off.

Donington Park is a firm favourite with Ginetta racers across all of their Championships. These 14 to 17 year olds are sure to entertain as much as the ‘big boys’!
