Zooming Zamparelli

He began the 2008 Ginetta Junior season as a favourite for the title, and after eight rounds Dino Zamparelli is zipping ahead with his Title challenge with a seventy-five point advantage.

Tom Carnaby is his closest challenger but the Tollbar racer who won both races at Rockingham, had a less than perfect run out at Donington Park which helped pave the way for Zamparelli’s double win.

Finishing last in the first and failing to finish in the second, Carnaby took just two points away from the Derbyshire circuit. A clash with Jake Farndon nudged him into the gravel at McLeans in the first and a visit to the pits subsequently placed him a lap down the remainder of the field.

Jake Rattenbury and Nick Ponting triggered a race two incident at Redgate that resulted in Carnaby clashing with team-mate George Richardson and Ashley Craig who in turn, became the first Ginetta Junior driver to land upside down!

Nobody was injured, but it will be touch and go for these drivers as to whether they will have their cars repaired in time for this weekend’s Thruxton races.

Racing novice Josh Hill impressed at Donington park in just his fourth race weekend lining up on pole position for both races. Seventeen-year old Hill was unable to hold off Zamparelli and convert pole into a win, but a third and second has taken him up to third in the drivers standings.

Unlucky not to win race one, Hill succumbed to Zamparelli’s pressure with a last corner mistake going into the final lap. Clipping a foam bale at Goddards, he ended up with the plastic trailing the right hand side of the car in third place behind Richardson.

BRDC Stars of Tomorrow scholarship driver Daniel Lloyd survived the mid-field scraps to take his debut podium at Donington Park two weeks ago. Finishing third, the battle for the final podium place was highly entertaining but it all ended in tears on the final lap for Farndon and Williamson with both crashing out at the Old Hairpin allowing Lloyd through.

Zamparelli was quickest in testing here at Thruxton few weeks ago so expect him to be a frontrunner again, but the characteristics of the circuit won’t necessarily mean he’ll be the winner.

Williamson and Farndon may well be back in the leading pack once again, but they’ll be hoping not to trip over themselves this time! Alice Powell too has threatened for a second podium position after her first in Round Two. Her qualifying position and race pace have improved since joining last year, but trips off of the tarmac do not convert into wins! However, she did a fantastic job of climbing from 14th on the grid to fifth at the finish last time out.

These Ginetta G20 Junior cars allow for spectacularly close racing as they don’t rely on aerodynamics but benefit massively from a slipstream from the car in front.

These Junior cars haven’t been here since 2006 but last year their Ginetta G20 Senior counterparts visited the circuit twice and provided
crowds – including the BTCC fans in October - with some spectacular racing with the lead changing almost every lap!

Breaking a tow at the front of a very determined field is a difficult thing to do. Will anyone be able to do it or will there be a fight to the flag?
